On his website Craig Childs says that he travels “the interstitial spaces, cracks in the sidewalk”. He has spent a lot of time, too, in Canyonlands National Park in the United States, and now knows its 340,000 acres well enough that he can leave paper maps at home. He and his friends, he writes in High Country News, long ago “passed some hidden threshold. We no longer thought in paper. The landscape was being written inside us.”
