In 1992, at the age of 24, Christopher McCandless headed into the wilderness of Alaska seeking a new way of life (he had rechristened himself “Alexander Supertramp”) and perhaps an escape from the modern world. Four months later, emaciated and helpless, he died in the back of a broken-down bus he had used as a shelter. His story has been told by Jon Krakaeur in an article for Outside magazine and then a bestselling book (Into The Wild) and a film. None of those accounts plays down the potential dangers involved in lighting out for the territory as McCandless did. So why are so many young people intent on following his trail to the bus? Eva Holland, for Skye on AOL, set off to find out.
