Gardening in the Himalaya

I’m currently reading, and greatly enjoying, Called by the Hills (Daunt Books, £12.99), in which the Indian novelist Anuradha Roy welcomes us into her home, garden and community in the Himalayan hill station of Ranikhet. I see that Granta magazine has put online a chapter from the book, in which Roy tells of her tussles in the garden with her housekeeper, “a woman who felt that I needed education in all things botanical”.

Roy will be among writers taking part in the Daunt Books Festival in Marylebone, London, next month (March 19-20). Among others on the bill are Robert Macfarlane, in conversation with Adam Weymouth, and Tharik Hussain, talking to Sophy Roberts.
