Many of the miners in California Steve Boggan encounters in his new book, Gold Fever, which I reviewed recently for Telegraph Travel, do their digging, sluicing and diving as a hobby. Their counterparts in La Rinconada, in Peru, are more desperate, and at greater danger. For them, William Finnegan reports in The New Yorker, “poverty remains the first and fundamental goad”.
