Jonathan C Slaght, whose latest book is Tigers Between Empires (Allen Lane, £30), was among contributors this morning to Start the Week on Radio 4. The book was also reviewed in both the FTWeekend and The Sunday Times. In the FT, Jonathan Guthrie said it is a “fine book”, in “spare, economical prose”, and “stands as an impressive addition to recent literature on big-cat conservation”. In The Sunday Times, James McConnachie said Slaght’s first book, Owls of the Eastern Ice (which was short-listed for the 2021 Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year Award), “turned remote, demanding scientific fieldwork into something almost magical”, but that the author faces a stiffer test documenting the tiger project. Slaght, he says, “has a somewhat relentless appetite for local detail, and the region sounds like an acquired taste”, but “even if the efforts feel slightly exhausting, this book does offer that rarest and happiest of things in the world of nature conservation: a success story.”
