The new travel-writing prize of the University of South Wales, which I mentioned recently, was won last week by Mandy Sutter, from Ilkley, West Yorkshire, for her retelling, through her own eyes, of her mother’s childhood in 1960s Nigeria, “Bush Meat: As My Mother Told Me”.

And the best travel book of all time written in English? Well, according to the results of the poll conducted by the organisers of the prize, that was Losing Israel by Jasmine Donahaye. Now, Losing Israel is a fine book, as I said when it was published, but as it’s been out only a year it might be a tiny bit early to suggest it’s stood the test of time.
