In Spain, where there have been numerous protests over mass tourism, the word of the summer has been “turismofobia”. In The Sunday Times at the weekend, Chris Haslam considered what governments and the travel trade should be doing to put things right, not only in Spain but elsewhere in Europe. In a recently published book, The New Tourist (Simon & Schuster), Paige McClanahan, an American journalist based in France, tells how tourism has shaped the world, for better and for worse, and argues that the right kind of tourism — and the right kind of tourist — can be a powerful force for good. She talked to Zoe Williams of The Guardian.
