Travels (on a budget) with Frommer

I’ve never used a guidebook from Frommer’s (Rough Guides, Lonely Planet and Footprint have been my most reliable companions), but I’m conscious of the way Arthur Frommer, who has died at 95, transformed the way Americans travel with his first book, Europe on 5 Dollars a Day. As his daughter Pauline, put it, “My father opened up the world to so many people… He believed deeply that travel could be an enlightening activity and one that did not require a big budget.” For more on Frommer and his bargain-hunting ways, see The Guardian and The New York Times.
