Stephanie Alizondo Griest grew up in what she calls “a half-white, half-brown family and town” in southern Texas, and has since been drawn to “the liminal space between nations”. For Witness magazine, based at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, she reports on how Mohawk people, while engaged in a protest that entailed walking only five miles, found themselves subject to the laws of two counties, one state, two provinces, two countries, and three different tribal governments.
