What’s new

A few things I’d have mentioned if I hadn’t been pushed for time lately…

Jeremy Bassetti, the man behind Travel Writing World, has a new podcast titled “Creative Journeys”. His first guest is Alastair Humphreys, whose latest book, Local, I’ve already recommended here.

The Writers Rebel site, the work of authors who are members of the climate-activist group Extinction Rebellion, has an extract from Shahnaz Habib’s Airplane Mode, which first appeared in the US and is now out in Britain (from September Publishing).

I’ve missed the peg — Anglo-Indian Day was August 2 — but Teatime at Peggy’s (Journey Books/Bradt) by Stephen McClarence and Clare Jenkins is a warm and eye-opening introduction to a community in India that is fast disappearing.

After seeing Salil Tripathi’s review in Saturday’s Guardian, I’d also like to read The New India: The Unmaking of the World’s Largest Democracy by Rahul Bhatia (Abacus, £25). Other books touching on travel or place that I’ve seen reviewed recently include The Boundless River: Stories from the Realm of the Rhine by Mathijs Deen (Quercus, £22) and Other Rivers by Peter Hessler (Atlantic Books, £25).
