Raynor Winn was last night named the first winner of the new £10,000 Christopher Bland Prize for The Salt Path, the story of how she and her terminally ill husband, having lost their home and their livelihood, set off to walk the South West Coast Path. The prize, run by the Royal Society of Literature, will be awarded annually to a novelist or non-fiction writer judged to have published the best debut at the age of 50 or above.
