Last night was launch night at Stanfords in London for Chris Moss’s Where Tourists Seldom Tread (Guardian Faber, £20), in which he brings to book a series he has been writing for the travel pages of The Guardian on bypassed towns in Britain and Northern Ireland. It’s a celebration of places that are deemed by most people, and the market, as “too plain, rundown, functional or funless to be worthy of anyone’s leisure time”. “Tell your friends,” Moss says, “to swap Tenerife and Timbuktu for Barrow, or Wrexham, or Walsall, or Colne… Britain is their oyster. Flight-free. Local. Walkable. Wondrous.”
