English skies seen through a time-lapse camera

Weatherland high resI’m looking forward to hearing the radio adaptation of Alexandra Harris’s Weatherland, which starts on Radio 4 next week. The book came out last September but I’ve only just got a copy.

It’s an engrossing account of how writers and artists have responded to England’s weather over the centuries, and was inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando (published in 1928), which establishes the atmosphere of English life at different periods by describing changes in the air. Harris says in her introduction: “I wanted to experience a sense of time travel, and to see England (and English skies) as if filmed with a time-lapse camera.”
