Macfarlane in ‘the Underland’

Robert Macfarlane’s The Old Ways was my favourite work of non-fiction in 2012. Having written in successive books about mountains, wild places and footpaths, he is now turning his attention to the world beneath our feet. He is researching a book with the working title “Underland”; one that promises to range from the storm drains of Toronto to the limestone caverns of Slovenia. In the current Granta travel edition (see previous post), he reports on a descent into the limestone caves of the Peak District. In a podcast for Granta, he talks about that trip (“I went down into hell and found a saint”), his new project and travel writing in general.
