Next time you find yourself with half an hour to kill on a journey, try filling it with “Herman Melville’s Sea Change”, which went out on Radio 4 at the start of this month. It’s presented by the poet Paul Farley and tells how Melville’s visits to Britain played a part in the writing of his great American novel, Moby Dick. There are contributions from Philip Hoare, author of Leviathan, and Horatio Clare, who wrote last year’s Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year, Down to the Sea in Ships. It’s a lovely, salty story that opens the eyes as well as the ears.
