Somehow, I forgot to mention here the latest book from Jeff Young, who was short-listed for the Costa Biography Award for his Liverpool memoir Ghost Town (2020). In Wild Twin, published by Little Toller last month, he recalls how he slipped out of his parents’ house to hitch-hike to Paris in the 1970s, in search of a version of himself he calls the wild twin, a feral drifter. “Journeying across Europe, from cathedral to doss-house, from red-light district to deportation and breakdown, finally Young returns to Liverpool, caring for his dying father in the house he ran away from 50 years earlier, remembering the past with a man who can no longer remember.” The book has won praise from reviewers including Iain Sinclair and Charlie Connolly. Young has written about it for The Big Issue and talked about it on Saturday Live on Radio 4.
