Theroux’s Canada book ‘enchanting and thrilling’, says Wheeler

Paul Theroux has published his 12th book of journeys at the age of 85, but there’s no sign, in the view of his fellow travel writer Sara Wheeler, that this “senior road warrior” (as he styles himself) is past his best. Reviewing the “enchanting” True North for the November issue of the Literary Review, she declares: “Martin Amis said all writers go off. But that’s not true in the travel genre, perhaps because it’s the most gleefully flexible of forms… True North is as thrilling as The Great Railway Bazaar, the volume stowed in countless knapsacks in the late 1970s. The stylistic trademarks are all on display: keen observation, solid chunks of history, direct speech to leaven the prose, an eye for the underdog, a perfectly judged quantity of personal detail (so many travel writers get the balance wrong).”
