On night trains with Dan Richards

The best books on night trains? Dan Richards (author of Overnight: Journeys, Conversations and Stories After Dark, published by Canongate) drew not just on travel writing but also on fiction and poetry in his selection for The Observer on Sunday. He plumped for Moonlight Express by Monisha Rajesh, which went into paperback a couple of weeks ago (Bloomsbury); Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie; and Train Songs, edited by Sean O’Brien and Don Paterson. (Rajesh’s book was one of my favourite travel titles of 2025; Train Songs was welcomed by Chris Moss on its publication in the early days of Deskbound Traveller — in 2013.)
